Maritime College of State Maritime Academy is the first maritime educational institution in Ukraine, which is the second only to Arkhangelsk Maritime School.

It was founded by the Decree of Emperor Nicolay I in February 1834 as the School of Merchant Shipping.

In 1996 the school was reorganized into Maritime College, and from September 1, 2007 college became the part of Kherson State Maritime Academy. 84 full-time teachers provide the high level of training work in the college. Among them associate professors and candidates of sciences, most of them have long seagoing experience.

Today the college system of marine specialists training corresponds to the requirements of International convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for seafarers, approved by IMO (International Marine Organization). In 2003, the secondary specialized school 3 was joined to the college and on base of it the professional marine lyceum was created. For all the period of existence more than 30 000 of marine specialists were trained. Among them there are 10 Heroes of the Soviet Union and the Socialist Labor, 9 admirals, 2 generals, 8 laureates of State Prize, 2 Governors, the director of Marine and River Transport of Ukraine, 3 heads of shipping companies.

More than 30 modern working have on their boards the names of college’s graduates. For the fruitful, many-sided work in training of future marine specialists and in connection with 150th anniversary of foundation the college was awarded by the Order of Friendship of People.

Since 1996, the college entered in scientific and methodical complexes of Odessa National Maritime Academy, Kiev State Academy of Water Transport, National University of Shipbuilding named after Admiral Makarov.
